Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy
What is PRP?
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) treatment uses concentrated blood cells from your pet to improve coagulation, angiogenesis (formation of new blood supply), immune response, and tissue repair. The growth factors in your pet’s blood can also be used to promote tissue generation.
Blood is collected from your pet and mixed with an anticoagulant solution. The blood is then placed into a specialized device and spun to separate the components of your pet’s blood. Red blood cells platelet poor plasma is separated from the beneficial buffy coat layer. This buffy coat layer contains beneficial platelets, growth factors, and white blood cells that can help your pet heal. This platelet rich plasma from the buffy coat is collected and returned to the pet via injection to promote healing.
What conditions are helped by PRP?
PRP has been documented to help in a wide range of conditions. Inflammation and wounded tissue are particularly targeted by PRP.
- Musculoskeletal disorders involving joints, bones, tendons and ligaments
- Orthopedic recovery (TPLO, CCL tear, fractures, amputations)
- Acute and chronic degenerative disorders
- Ophthalmology and corneal abnormalities
- Dermatologic conditions
- Wound management
- Dentistry, periodontal disease and stomatitis
Platelet rich plasma therapy can promote healing with many conditions. PRP is more cost effective than many other interventions and medications and is a covered treatment by many pet insurance companies. Using your pet’s own blood is minimally invasive and risk of side effects is lower than many medications. An exam with one of our doctors can help you determine if PRP could be an effective tool in treating your pet’s inflammatory condition or wound.
